01. Frequently Asked Questions

Start here for fast answers to the most common nicotine pouch questions.

How do you use nicotine pouches?

To use a nicotine pouch, place it between your upper lip and gum and allow it to rest in place without chewing or swallowing it. Nicotine and flavor are released gradually and absorbed through the lining of your mouth over approximately 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the brand and your preference. When finished, remove the pouch and dispose of it in the catch lid or an appropriate waste container. Rotate placement between different areas of your upper lip to help minimize localized gum irritation. Nicotine pouches are intended only for adult nicotine users.

How long do nicotine pouches last?

Most nicotine pouches are designed to last between 20 and 60 minutes, although the exact duration depends on the brand, pouch moisture level, and your personal preference. Moist pouches often deliver flavor more quickly, while drier pouches may provide a slower, more gradual release. Many users remove a pouch once the flavor fades or the nicotine experience begins to diminish, but there is no requirement to keep it in for the full hour.

Can you swallow nicotine pouch saliva?

It is generally fine to swallow the small amount of saliva that naturally mixes with a nicotine pouch during normal use although tolerances may vary. Nicotine is primarily absorbed through the lining of your mouth while the pouch is under your lip, so swallowing saliva does not significantly increase nicotine absorption. However, swallowing large amounts of nicotine-containing saliva, especially with higher strength stronger pouches, may contribute to nausea, an upset stomach, or hiccups in some users. If you find yourself feeling uncomfortable, remove the pouch, discard it, and consider using a lower-strength pouch or a shorter usage time.

Do you chew nicotine pouches?

Most nicotine pouches should not be chewed. They are designed to rest between your upper lip and gum, where nicotine is absorbed through the lining of your mouth. However, a few products use innovative designs that are exceptions. Sesh+ features a patented gum-based pouch that can be gently chewed occasionally to release an extra burst of nicotine and flavor before being "parked" back under the lip. Lucy Breakers contain a small liquid-filled flavor capsule that is meant to be gently squeezed or popped once during use to release additional flavor and moisture—not continuously chewed like gum. After activating the capsule, the pouch should simply remain under your lip for the rest of the session.

Do nicotine pouches expire? Can I freeze them?

Nicotine pouches do expire but do not spoil like food. Most brands print a best before or expiration date on the bottom of the can, typically 6 to 18 months from the manufacturing date, depending on the product and storage conditions.

After that date, the pouches are generally less enjoyable. They may become dry, dusty, or brittle, the flavor can fade or taste stale, and nicotine may be released less in a less efficient manner.

To maximize freshness, keep unopened cans sealed and store them in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. If a pouch has an unusual odor, visible mold, or significant discoloration, it should be discarded.

Refrigerating unopened nicotine pouches can help preserve freshness for longer, but freezing is generally not recommended because it may affect the pouch material and texture.

02. What Are Nicotine Pouches?

Nicotine pouches have grown immensely popular with adult nicotine consumers in a short period of time.

What are nicotine pouches?

Nicotine pouches are small, tobacco-free oral pouches that deliver nicotine through the lining of your mouth. They are generally white in color. Instead of being chewed or smoked, a pouch is placed between your upper lip and gum, where it gradually releases nicotine and flavor over 20 to 60 minutes. Most nicotine pouches contain nicotine, plant-based fibers, food-grade flavorings, sweeteners, moisture agents, and pH balancers that help optimize nicotine absorption. They are available in a wide range of strengths and flavors. Some of these flavors were inspired by oral tobacco, such as mint and wintergreen. Others are unique to pouches and even vape juice inspired like coffee, citrus, berry and fruit.

What all nicotine pouches have in they provide adult nicotine users with a smoke-free, vapor-free alternative to cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, and vaping products.

How do nicotine pouches work?

Nicotine pouches work by delivering nicotine through the lining of your mouth rather than through your lungs. After placing a pouch between your upper lip and gum, saliva moistens the pouch and releases nicotine, which is absorbed through the oral mucosa and enters the bloodstream.

Most nicotine pouches are formulated with nicotine salts for stability and a smoother experience, along with pH balancers such as sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate. These ingredients help create an environment where an effective proportion of the nicotine is present in its more readily absorbed unprotonated (freebase) form while maintaining product stability and comfort with a nic salt base.

Depending on the brand, pouch moisture, and nicotine strength, nicotine and flavor are typically released over 20 to 60 minutes before the pouch is removed and discarded.

What are nicotine pouches made of?

Nicotine pouches are typically made with nicotine, plant-based fibers, water, flavorings, sweeteners, and ingredients that help manage moisture, texture, and nicotine release. The pouch material is usually a soft, nonwoven fiber, while the filling often uses cellulose or other plant-based fibers to hold the nicotine and flavor blend. Most formulas also include pH-adjusting ingredients, such as sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate, which help nicotine absorb through the lining of the mouth.

Are nicotine pouches tobacco-free?

Synthetic nicotine pouches are tobacco-free products that contain no tobacco leaf, tobacco dust, or other tobacco plant material. Instead, they use synthetic nicotine combined with plant-based fibers, flavorings, sweeteners, and other food-grade ingredients to deliver nicotine discreetly through the lining of the mouth. Although they contain nicotine, they are distinct from traditional smokeless tobacco products because they do not contain tobacco itself.

Are nicotine pouches the same as smokeless tobacco?

No. While nicotine pouches, smokeless tobacco, and snus are all oral products, they are not the same. Nicotine pouches are tobacco-free and contain nicotine along with plant-based fibers, flavorings, and other ingredients, but no tobacco leaf or tobacco plant material.

Traditional smokeless tobacco products, such as chewing tobacco and moist snuff, contain processed tobacco, while Swedish-style snus also contains finely ground tobacco that is pasteurized rather than fermented. Because nicotine pouches contain nicotine but no tobacco, they are considered a distinct category of oral nicotine products.

03. Nicotine Pouch Brands

Compare major nicotine pouch brands, including brands carried by Mi-Pouch and other major competitors.

ZYN Pouches

Shop ZYN Pouches →

ZYN is the best-known nicotine pouch brand in the United States and is manufactured by Swedish Match, which was acquired by Philip Morris International (PMI) in 2022. Introduced in the U.S. in 2014, ZYN helped popularize tobacco-free nicotine pouches and remains the best-selling brand. Available in 3mg and 6mg nicotine strengths, each standard ZYN can contains 15 pouches and is intended for adult nicotine users.

ZYN has achieved several major regulatory milestones in the United States. In 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized the marketing of 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products through the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) pathway, making ZYN the first nicotine pouch brand authorized for sale by the FDA.

In 2026, the FDA also granted Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) orders for 20 ZYN products, allowing Swedish Match to market specific claims that completely switching from cigarettes to these authorized ZYN products reduces exposure to harmful chemicals and lowers the risk of several smoking-related diseases compared with continued cigarette smoking. These authorizations apply only to specific FDA-authorized ZYN products and do not mean the products are risk-free.

ZYN is offered in a broad range of flavors, including Cool Mint, Wintergreen, Spearmint, Peppermint, Chill, Citrus, Coffee, Cinnamon, Smooth, and Menthol.

New ZYN Ultra

Introduced in 2026, ZYN Ultra is a premium extension of the ZYN lineup with Hydro-Boosted technology, a moister slim pouch, stronger 9mg and 11mg nicotine strengths, and 20 pouches per can.

ALP Pouches

Shop ALP Pouches →

Alp nicotine pouches have distinctive branding. Every can features their urbane mascot: a winking gentleman in a crew-neck sweater and pork pie hat admiring a nicotine pouch.

Apart from the regulatory fights and nicotine prohibition lobby, there is little reason to mix nicotine pouches with politics. It is for this reason that ALP Nicotine Pouches downplays their origin and focuses on this sharply dressed illustrated pouch aficionado. But these tobacco-free nicotine pouches were introduced in 2024 through a partnership between Tucker Carlson Network and Turning Point Brands.

Carlson is a longtime nicotine pouch user and launched ALP after becoming dissatisfied with existing brands. His stated goal was to create an American-made alternative focused on premium quality, modern branding, and the preferences of adult nicotine users.

The Alp origin story is no longer the lede and today they are one of the fastest-growing nicotine pouch brands in the United States. And one of the few of these not owned by the tobacco industry.

ALP nicotine pouches feature primarily mint flavors with limited fruit offerings. These include Chilled Mint, Spearmint, Mountain Wintergreen, and other cooling varieties. The pouch itself is a moist, slim pouch format. There are 20 pouches in a can and the standard strengths are 3mg, 6mg and 9mg.

AMMO Pouches

Shop AMMO Pouches →

Ammo nicotine pouches also have distinctive branding. Each can features a pastel reinterpretation of the old M81 U.S. Woodland camouflage pattern which was used from the mid-1980s into the 21st century. The camo pattern is recolored to reflect the pouch flavor.

The martial theme continues with their nicotine strengths. Nearly every aspect of the brand, from its name and packaging to its product terminology, draws inspiration from ammunition and firearms.

Rather than using conventional strength labels alone, AMMO classifies its nicotine levels as Standard (9mg), Strong (12mg), and Magnum (15mg).

But what is interesting is that Ammo pouches do not rely on a brute force approach to nicotine pouch designs. They strengths are high but the delivery is smooth and slow.

Ammo nicotine pouches are a premium product with innovative ingredients. Most nicotine pouches use cellulose fillers. AMMO nicotine pouches feature patented coconut-fiber pouch technology. They are engineered to provide a smoother, more consistent, and longer-lasting nicotine release. The Magnum strength might be on the high-end but the actual release is not as overwhelming as the number suggests and their pouches provide strong flavor for up to an hour while maintaining a comfortable fit under the lip.

Each Ammo nicotine pouch can contains 15 nicotine pouches and is sold individually or in 5-can retail packs, with all products assembled in the USA using domestic and imported ingredients. The available flavors are Mint, Wintergreen, Citrus, Blue Razz, Spicy Mango, and Natural. Natural is not a clear flavor but intended to provide a more tobacco inspired taste.

Juice Head Pouches

Shop Juice Head Pouches →

Juice Head Nicotine Pouches were launched as a ZTN (Zero Tobacco Nicotine)pouch by the Streamline Group. Juice Head of course is a vape juice company. Due to onerous restrictions that deny millions of adult vapor consumers access to their preferred flavors and products, Juice Head has brought those popular mint and fruit inspired flavors to the world of nicotine pouches.

Juice Head Nicotine Pouches are sold 20 to a can and are available in 6mg and 12mg strength. Described as fruit-forward, each flavor does contain a hint of cooling mint. The lineup includes Blueberry Lemon Mint, Mango Strawberry Mint, Peach Pineapple Mint, Raspberry Lemonade Mint, and Watermelon Strawberry Mint.

As 21+ adult vapers continue to be targeted by Big Tobacco and nicotine abstinence lobbyists, it is inevitable that more vape juice flavors will be found in pouches. Europe has long featured a plethora of tropical fruit, confection and ice flavors. But Juice Head is currently the only e-liquid manufacturer using their flavoring expertise to bring that experience to the pouch world.

Lucy Nicotine Pouches

Shop Lucy Breakers →

Lucy was founded San Francisco in 2019. They are a well-funded and innovative company that competes head-to-head with the tobacco industry for shelf space at convenience stores. Their pioneering Breakers are a serious change of pace from cookie-cutter pouches.

Lucy Slim

Lucy Slim is available in a variety of flavors, including Mint, Apple Ice, Mango, Berry Citrus, Espresso, and Apple Cider, giving adult nicotine users a diverse selection that extends well beyond conventional mint offerings.

Lucy Breakers

Lucy Breakers contain a small flavor capsule inside each pouch. Adult users can choose when to activate the capsule by gently pressing it, releasing a second burst of flavor during use.

This unique two-stage experience sets Lucy Breakers apart from conventional nicotine pouches, allowing users to enjoy the initial pouch flavor before introducing a fresh wave of intensity. They are available in 4mg and 8mg nicotine strengths. Lucy Breakers are offered in flavors including Mint, Mango, Berry Citrus, and Apple Ice.

Sesh+ Pouches

Shop Sesh+ Pouches →

Sesh+ is an independent American nicotine pouch brand founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs Max Cunningham and Michael Scarffe.

Unlike traditional nicotine pouches that rely primarily on plant-fiber fillers, Sesh+ features a patented gum-based pouch design that provides a softer, smoother feel under the lip. While not actually gum, the texture and lack of grit means they are designed to be chewed gently to release extra flavor and nicotine.

Sesh+ is manufactured in the United States using pharmaceutical-grade synthetic nicotine and is available in 4mg, 6mg, and 8mg nicotine strengths with 20 slim pouches per can.

Sesh+ has a standard lineup of flavors that include Mint, Wintergreen, Mango, Cappuccino, and Clear. They have released a limited edition Raspberry Lemon as well.

What else sets Sesh+ and the gum-style pouch apart? A growing network of adult ambassadors and celebrity investors. These include Post Malone, Diplo, Ashton Kutcher, DJ Khaled, and the Jonas Brothers.

Zimo Pouches

Shop Zimo Pouches →

Zimo nicotine pouches are a premium product with a semi-dry formulation that provides slow and consistent flavor release.

Zimo nicotine pouches are sold in the following flavors: Blueberry, Cinnamon, Grape, Lemon, Mango, Mint, Raspberry, Wintergreen, and Original.

Zimo leans heavily on European pouch technology and expertise. Far from a knock-off, it is a premium and solid choice with 0, 3mg, 6mg and 8mg strength options.

VELO, Zone, Rogue & on!

VELO, Zone, Rogue, and on! are among the largest nicotine pouch brands in the United States and are commonly found in convenience stores, gas stations, and tobacco retailers. These brands compete directly with ZYN and are also products of the Big Tobacco industry.

VELO

VELO is manufactured by British American Tobacco (BAT), one of the world's largest tobacco companies. Available in a wide range of flavors and nicotine strengths, VELO is the largest global rival of PMI's ZYN pouch product.

Zone

Zone is the newest major nicotine pouch brand from the tobacco industry. It is a product of ITG Brands, the U.S. subsidiary of Imperial Brands PLC.

Introduced in the United States in February 2024, Zone was created after Imperial acquired a portfolio of nicotine pouch products from Canadian manufacturer TJP Labs. Those products had previously been sold under the L!X brand. The use a moist pouch design and are available in multiple flavors.

Rogue

Rogue is owned by tobacco giant Swisher and was introduced in 2018. They have a unique pouch design that is larger and more moist than the competition. They are bulkier than the slim pouches and designed to create more saliva dip.

Rogue Gums, Pouches and Lozenges

Rogue offers addition tobacco free nicotine products other than pouches. NicoGen Pharma solutions manufactures white label polacrilex nicotine products for Rogue.

Nicotine polacrilex is a pharmaceutical-grade nicotine resin manufactured by companies such as NicoGen Pharma Solutions and Fertin Pharma.

In nicotine polacrilex, purified nicotine is bound to an ion-exchange resin that gradually releases nicotine as it mixes with saliva, providing a slower, more controlled release than the nicotine salt formulations commonly used in modern nicotine pouches.

on!

on! was developed by the Swedish company Burger Söhne and entered the U.S. market in 2016. In 2019, Altria Group acquired an 80% stake in Helix Innovations, the U.S. distributor of on!, and later completed the acquisition, making on! Altria's flagship nicotine pouch brand. They use mini-pouches. ZYN still accounts for half the market but since falling behind Velo, on! has relied on aggressive pricing to claim marketshare.

04. What Strength Should I Choose?

Compare nicotine pouch strengths and how milligram ratings differ across brands and pouch formats.

What nicotine pouch strength should I choose?

Nicotine pouch strengths vary by brand, typically ranging from 2mg to 15mg or more per pouch. Because nicotine content, pouch size, moisture level, and formulation differ between manufacturers, the same milligram rating may not produce the same experience across brands.

21+ adult nicotine users should compare product specifications and choose a nicotine strength that aligns with their existing nicotine use, preferably erring on the side of caution. Higher-strength products generally deliver more nicotine per pouch but variations in the filler and pH balances means that the strengths are not totally linear and 1-to-1.

Actual nicotine strengths are not even provided in many European markets. Instead, a more vague system of strength descriptors or a visible depiction such as this is provided: ⬤ ⬤ ⬤ ◯ ◯. Three of five would be a moderate strength nicotine pouch. All five circles filled in would be the highest strength.

2mg to 4mg nicotine pouches

2mg to 4mg nicotine pouches are among the lowest nicotine strengths available and are offered by several leading brands. Popular options include ZYN 3mg, Lucy Slim 4mg, Lucy Breakers 4mg, Sesh+ 4mg, Zimo 3mg, and ALP 3mg.

Because nicotine content, moisture, pouch size, and formulation vary by manufacturer, products with similar milligram ratings may not provide identical nicotine delivery or duration.

6mg to 8mg nicotine pouches

6mg to 8mg nicotine pouches are the best-selling nicotine strengths in the United States and are widely available across leading brands. Examples include ZYN 6mg, Lucy Slim 8mg, Lucy Breakers 8mg, Zimo 6mg and 8mg, Sesh+ 6mg and 8mg, NOAT, and ALP 6mg. ZYN 6mg outsells their 3mg, making it the single most popular product strength.

Because nicotine content, moisture level, and pouch design vary by manufacturer, products with similar milligram ratings may differ in longevity, rate of nicotine release and overall experience.

9mg to 12mg nicotine pouches

For many manufacturers, 9mg to 12mg nicotine pouches the top of the potency range. Until the launch of ZYN Ultra, it was not even an option for the Swedish Match product.

Examples include ALP 9mg and 12mg, AMMO 9mg and 12mg, Juice Head 12mg, Lucy Slim 12mg, and ZYN Ultra 9mg and 11mg.

As with all nicotine pouches, nicotine content, pouch moisture, and formulation vary by manufacturer, so products with similar milligram ratings may differ in nicotine release, longevity and overall experience.

15mg+ nicotine pouches

15mg and higher nicotine pouches represent the upper end of the nicotine pouch market and are less common than lower-strength options.

In Europe, some brands indicate nicotine strength with a dot rating rather than prominently displaying the milligram content. For example, VELO ●●●●● products typically contain 17mg of nicotine per pouch (though strengths vary slightly by market). In this system, the middle range of nicotine strengths would be represented like this: ●●●○○.

European brands such as VELO, KILLA, Pablo, Siberia, LOOP, and FIX are known for offering higher-strength nicotine pouches, with some products exceeding 20mg per pouch.

In the United States, higher-strength options include AMMO Magnum 15mgJuice Head 12mg, and ZYN Ultra 11mg. Maximum nicotine strengths are generally lower than those commonly available in parts of Europe at this time.

As is the case with more popular strengths, there is a variation between brands based on their formulation.

Why does one 6mg pouch feel stronger than another?

Nicotine strength is an extremely important measure but is only one factor that affects the nicotine pouch experience. Manufacturers use different pouch sizes, moisture levels, pH, and flavor formulations.

All of this influences flavor and nicotine release, which are the standards by which pouches are measured. A larger or moister pouch may also create more contact with the gum, which can affect the overall experience.

This is why two nicotine pouches labeled 6mg may not feel identical, even though they contain the same amount of nicotine.

05. Nicotine Pouch Flavors

Explore popular nicotine pouch flavor families and how brands approach flavor, cooling, and sweetness.

Mint, menthol, and wintergreen flavors

Mint, menthol, and wintergreen are among the most recognizable flavor profiles in the nicotine pouch category. These cooling flavors have long been used in products ranging from chewing gum, breath mints, mouthwash, and toothpaste to traditional smokeless tobacco because they leave a clean, refreshing sensation on the palate.

While each nicotine pouch manufacturer uses its own proprietary flavor formulations, mint, menthol, and wintergreen remain relatively standardized across brands, making them popular choices for adult nicotine users and more easily cross-shopped than other flavors.

Mint Nicotine Pouches

Mint pouches are available from virtually every major nicotine pouch manufacturer. There is some variation and brands may offer more than one mint option. The general flavor range stretches sweet peppermint-confection inspired profiles to cleaner spearmint gum inspired blends with a moderate cooling sensation.

Examples include ZYN Cool Mint, ALP Chilled Mint, AMMO Mint, Zimo Mint, NOAT Mint, Sesh+ Mint, and Lucy Mint

Juice Head incorporates mint into every last one of their flavors in order to provide a cooling and crisp sensation. There are five of these pouch flavors: Blueberry Lemon Mint, Mango Strawberry Mint, Peach Pineapple Mint, Raspberry Lemonade Mint, and Watermelon Strawberry Mint.

Menthol Nicotine Pouches

Menthol nicotine pouches have a crisp, icy cooling sensation rather than the sweeter herbal notes found in many mint products. While fewer brands offer a dedicated menthol flavor, the profile remains relatively consistent across the category, delivering an unmistakable cooling effect with minimal sweetness. Examples include ZYN Menthol and ALP Refreshing Chill, while menthol may also pop up as a cooling element in fruit flavors as well.

Wintergreen Nicotine Pouches

Wintergreen is one of the oldest and most recognizable flavors in the American oral nicotine category, having long been associated with traditional smokeless tobacco.

Wintergreen has a sweeter and slightly herbal flavor than menthol, which is characteristic of the wintergreen oil from which it was inspired.

ZYN Wintergreen, AMMO Wintergreen, Zimo Wintergreen, NOAT Wintergreen, and Sesh+ Wintergreen are all classic versions of this flavor profile. Flavor release, intensity and sweetness may vary but this is a remarkably consistent option.

Citrus, berry, mango, apple, and peach flavors

Citrus, berry, mango, apple, and peach are among the most popular fruit flavors in nicotine pouches. Adult nicotine users, including adult vapor consumers denied the flavors they prefer, will find options ranging from bright citrus and tart berry blends to tropical mango, crisp apple, and juicy peach across today's nicotine pouch market.

Leading brands offer a wide variety of fruit-inspired options, including ZYN Citrus, Zimo Lemon, Zimo Blueberry, Zimo Raspberry, Lucy Apple Ice, Lucy Mango, and ALP Tropical Fruit. Juice Head features only this style of flavor.

Coffee, cinnamon, and dessert-inspired flavors

Coffee, cinnamon, and dessert-inspired flavors offer a warmer alternative to the cooling mint, menthol, and wintergreen profiles that dominate the nicotine pouch category.

Just as chewing gums, breath fresheners, and mouthwashes often offer a mint and a sweet, spicy cinnamon option, nicotine pouch manufacturers also are beginning to offer the warmer option of cinnamon and spicy pouches. ZYN, Zimo, on! and rogue offer a cinnamon flavor.

Coffee and confection-inspired varieties are also popular. ZYN Coffee, ZYN Cinnamon, Lucy Espresso, Sesh+ Cappuccino, and AMMO Natural (a tobacco-inspired profile) offer a similar earthier flavor experience.

There are also limited-edition releases such as the ZYN After Dark. The flavors in this collection included ZYN Espresso Martini and ZYN Spiced Cider. Lucy Apple Cider is another beverage inspired nicotine pouch.

Smooth, clear, and unflavored pouches

Smooth, clear, and unflavored nicotine pouches are designed to have little or no added flavor. ZYN Chill has only cooling elements. Most of these pouches do not have even that and simply rely on the active ingredients to provide mouthfeel.

In states such as California, where flavored tobacco products are generally prohibited, these products provide an alternative to mint, fruit, and dessert varieties.

Rather than a distinct flavor profile, unflavored nicotine pouches typically have at most a very mild taste with subtle sweetness from the ingredients. Examples include ZYN Smooth and Sesh+ Clear, all of which deliver a clean, nearly flavorless experience.

06. Nicotine Pouches vs. Other Nicotine Products

Compare nicotine pouches with other adult nicotine products by format, use style, odor, portability, ingredients, and nicotine delivery.

Nicotine pouches vs vaping

Nicotine pouches and vaping offer different experiences for adult nicotine users. Unlike vape devices, nicotine pouches require no battery, charging, coils, or e-liquid. Pouches are easy to carry in a pocket or bag. They may not be permitted on some airlines or even some locales, but overall the absence of a battery makes them easier to tote.

Nicotine pouches also produce no vapor or noticeable odor. In some settings, nicotine pouches may be permitted where vaping is not, although policies vary by workplace, airline, venue, school, or local law, so users should always follow applicable rules.

Nicotine pouches are also available in a broad range of mint, fruit, coffee, cinnamon, and other flavor profiles, though flavor availability may vary by state and local regulations.

Nicotine pouches vs smoking

Nicotine pouches and cigarettes are very different product categories. Cigarettes involve combustion and require a lighter, while nicotine pouches are placed under the lip. There is no flame, combustion, ash or most importantly smoke. There are many locations where pouches may be permitted and smoking is most assuredly barred. But you will want to check first. Always follow applicable laws and venue policies.

Modern nicotine pouches were first developed and popularized in Sweden before expanding globally. Today, ZYN, the leading U.S. brand, has received FDA marketing authorization for certain products through the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) pathway, and specific ZYN products have also received Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) orders permitting certain reduced-exposure marketing claims.

These authorizations apply only to specific ZYN products and do not mean they are safe or risk-free. Nicotine is an addictive chemical. If you do not currently use nicotine MiPouch does not want your nicotine pouch business. Nor are we interested in customers under 21+. Our goal is to provide nicotine pouches and the best customer experience to current nicotine pouch users of legal age.

Nicotine pouches vs loose leaf tobacco, dip and snus

Dip, loose leaf chewing tobacco, snus, and synthetic nicotine pouches are all oral nicotine products. But there are many differences between these classes of product.

Dip, also called moist snuff, is the traditional smokeless tobacco product. It is made from fermented or fire-cured tobacco. A pinch or chaw placed between the gum and lip and often produces tobacco juices that users spit out. Dip is available in long cut, fine cut, and wide cut varieties.

Loose leaf chewing tobacco, often called chaw, consists of strips of sweetened cured tobacco that are chewed or held in the mouth before being discarded.

Snus is a Swedish-style smokeless tobacco product made from finely ground, pasteurized tobacco that is sealed in small pouches and traditionally placed under the upper lip without spitting.

Synthetic nicotine pouches contain nicotine made without tobacco plants and use plant-based fibers, sweeteners, flavorings, and pouch materials instead of tobacco leaf. As a result, they contain nicotine but no tobacco leaf, tobacco dust, or loose tobacco, distinguishing them from both dip and snus.

Nicotine pouches vs nicotine gum and lozenges

Nicotine pouches and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products such as nicotine gum, lozenges, and mini lozenges are different categories of oral nicotine products.

Nicotine pouches contain synthetic nicotine combined with plant-based fibers, sweeteners, flavorings, and other food-grade ingredients.

By contrast, most nicotine gums and lozenges use nicotine polacrilex, a pharmaceutical formulation in which nicotine is bound to an ion-exchange resin that gradually releases nicotine as it mixes with saliva.

Nicotine polacrilex has been used in nicotine replacement products for decades and is manufactured by pharmaceutical suppliers such as Fertin Pharma, Cambrex, and NicoGen Pharma Solutions for companies producing nicotine replacement therapies.

NRT products are manufactured and marketed by pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare companies rather than traditional nicotine pouch manufacturers.

Major NRT brands include Nicorette (Kenvue), Nicotinell/Nicabate (Haleon), Habitrol (Dr. Reddy's Laboratories), and numerous store-brand nicotine gums and lozenges sold by retailers such as CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Costco, and Amazon, many of which are contract manufactured by companies like Fertin Pharma.

While both nicotine pouches and NRT products are synthetic nicotine products placed in the mouth, they differ in their ingredients, intended regulatory pathways, product formulations, and manufacturers.

07. Common Side Effects

Find practical answers to common nicotine pouch side effect questions.

Does nicotine make you poop?

Nicotine is a stimulant, and some people report an increased urge to have a bowel movement after using nicotine products. Individual responses vary. If you notice unwanted effects from nicotine, consider stopping use, using less or reducing the frequency of use. Consult a healthcare professional if symptoms are persistent or concerning.

Upset stomach and nausea

Some people may experience stomach discomfort or nausea after using nicotine products, particularly if they use more nicotine than they are accustomed to. Individual responses vary, and not everyone experiences these effects. If discomfort occurs, reducing/ceasing nicotine use or choosing a lower nicotine strength are options. If symptoms are severe, persistent, or concerning, consult a healthcare professional

Dry mouth, gum irritation, and mouth sores

Nicotine pouches are parked on the gums for prolonged periods of time. Some pouches last up to an hour. Naturally there are questions about how these products interact with the inside of your mouth.

Can nicotine pouches cause dry mouth?

Some adult preport dry mouth while using nicotine pouches. Staying hydrated and following the product's directions for use may help reduce this effect. Individual responses vary, and not everyone experiences dry mouth.

Can nicotine pouches cause mouth irritation?

Some users may experience temporary irritation where a nicotine pouch rests against the gum. Rotating the placement of the pouch between different areas of the mouth may help reduce localized irritation. If irritation is persistent or severe, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Can nicotine pouches cause gum sores?

Some users may notice localized soreness or irritation in the area where a nicotine pouch is placed. Rotating pouch placement and avoiding prolonged use in the same location may help reduce localized discomfort. If sores persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

Can nicotine pouches cause bad breath (halitosis)?

Nicotine pouches are not generally associated with the lingering odor produced by smoked tobacco. However, dry mouth can contribute to bad breath in some individuals. Maintaining good oral hygiene and staying hydrated may help reduce this effect.

Why do nicotine pouches burn or tingle?

A mild tingling or warming sensation is common when using nicotine pouches, especially during the first few minutes after placement. This sensation can result from the nicotine, the pouch's ingredients, and flavorings such as mint or menthol coming into contact with the gum.

The intensity varies by brand, nicotine strength, flavor, and individual sensitivity. If the sensation is severe, persistent, or uncomfortable, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.

08. Travel & Restrictions

Understand where nicotine pouches may be permitted and where facility, employer, airline, or local rules may prohibit them.

Airplanes, TSA, and airports

Can I travel with nicotine pouches on airplanes?

In the United States, nicotine pouches are generally permitted in both carry-on and checked baggage by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Because they contain no liquid or battery, they are not subject to many of the rules that apply to vape devices. Airport security policies and the laws of your destination may differ. It is important to be especially aware of local laws when travelling internationally. They are stringently regulated or banned in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Iran. It is crucial Check applicable regulations before you fly.

Can I use nicotine pouches on an airplane?

Because nicotine pouches produce no smoke or vapor, they may be treated differently than smoking or vaping.

Airline policies vary, and flight crews have broad authority to enforce their carrier's rules while onboard.

Airlines establish their own onboard policies through their Contract of Carriage. Flight crews have broad authority to enforce those rules. Even if a product is legal to carry through TSA screening, an airline may prohibit or restrict its use during a flight. Always follow the instructions of the flight crew and your airline's policies.

No major US airline currently bans bringing nicotine pouches in your luggage, most carriers strictly prohibit their in-flight use. Headlines were made when Delta Air Lines enforced a strict ban on all smokeless tobacco and nicotine pouches, with flight attendants actively asking passengers to spit them out.

Can I use nicotine pouches in an airport?

Airport rules vary by airport, terminal, and country. While nicotine pouches do not produce smoke or vapor, some airports or individual facilities may have policies that restrict the use of nicotine products indoors. Always follow posted signs and local rules when traveling.

Hotels, casinos, stadiums, and concerts

Policies vary by property and venue. Nicotine pouches may be treated differently than smoking or vaping, but many hotels, casinos, stadiums, concert venues, workplaces, and other private businesses establish their own rules regarding nicotine products.

Always follow posted policies and any instructions from staff or security. If you're unsure, ask the venue before using nicotine pouches.

Workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities and nicotine-free campuses

Many workplaces, schools, universities, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities have tobacco-free, nicotine-free, or smoke-free campus policies that may expressly prohibit nicotine pouches.

Individual employers, school districts, colleges, and medical facilities establish their own rules, and some policies specifically include all nicotine products. Always follow posted policies and your organization's rules before using nicotine pouches.

International travel

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Laws governing nicotine pouches vary widely from country to country. While some nations permit their sale and use, others restrict nicotine strength, limit flavors, require prescriptions, or prohibit nicotine pouches altogether.

Before traveling internationally, review the laws of your destination, any countries where you will be transiting, and your airline's policies. Complying with local regulations can help avoid delays, confiscation, or other legal issues while traveling.

09. Safety & Handling

Review safety topics including swallowing, nicotine saliva, storage, disposal, children, pets, and adult-only use.

What happens if you swallow a nicotine pouch?

Nicotine pouches are intended to be placed under the lip, not swallowed. Accidentally swallowing a pouch may cause stomach discomfort, nausea, or vomiting in some people, particularly children or individuals who are sensitive to nicotine.

If a child or pet swallows a nicotine pouch, contact your local poison center or seek medical attention immediately. If an adult experiences severe or persistent symptoms after swallowing a nicotine pouch, contact a healthcare professional or your local poison center.

What happens if you swallow nicotine pouch saliva?

Nicotine pouch users generally do not need to spit out saliva, a key differentiator when compared to traditional smokeless tobacco. For this reason, swallowing saliva while using a nicotine pouch is common.

However, swallowing large amounts of nicotine-containing saliva may contribute to stomach discomfort or nausea in some individuals, particularly those who are sensitive to nicotine or using a stronger product. Individual responses vary.

Children, pets, and storage

Keep the containers out of reach and view of children and pets, such as a high cabinet that locks. Ask family members and visitors who use nicotine pouches to also safely store their products.

Encourage family members and visitors who use nicotine pouches to store their products safely as well. Even used pouches should be disposed of responsibly, as they may still contain residual nicotine.

Pregnancy, blood pressure, and medications

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or take prescription medications, speak with your physician or another qualified healthcare professional before using nicotine pouches.

This is particularly important if you are considering changing the type of nicotine product you use or have questions about how nicotine may relate to your individual health circumstances.

Proper disposal

Place used nicotine pouches in the catch lid of the can or another suitable waste container until they can be discarded in the trash. Do not litter nicotine pouches or flush them down toilets, as they are not designed to break down in plumbing systems. Because used pouches may still contain residual nicotine, dispose of them responsibly and keep them out of the reach of children and pets.

10. Nicotine Pouch Science

Learn the chemistry, absorption, and formulation concepts behind modern nicotine pouches.

What are nicotine salts?

Nicotine salts are a form of nicotine created by combining freebase nicotine with an organic acid, such as benzoic acid. Compared with freebase nicotine, nicotine salts are more chemically stable and are widely used in modern nicotine products, including nicotine pouches and many vape products.

The term "nicotine salt" describes the chemical form of the nicotine itself. How nicotine is ultimately absorbed in the mouth depends on the pouch's overall formulation, including its pH.

What is freebase nicotine?

Freebase nicotine is nicotine in its uncharged, or unprotonated, form. Protonated means the nicotine molecule is carrying an extra hydrogen ion (a proton), giving it a positive electrical charge. Unprotonated nicotine has no extra proton, making it electrically neutral and more readily absorbed through the tissues of the mouth or lungs.

What is bioavailability?

Bioavailability refers to the proportion of a substance that enters the bloodstream and becomes available for the body to use. In nicotine pouches, bioavailability is influenced by factors such as the nicotine formulation, pouch moisture, pH, and how long the pouch remains under the lip. As a result, two nicotine pouches with the same labeled nicotine strength may differ in how much nicotine is ultimately absorbed.

What are pH balancers?

pH adjusters are ingredients that help control the acidity or alkalinity of a nicotine pouch. Common examples include sodium carbonate (washing soda), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and calcium carbonate (limestone or chalk). Although they are used in small amounts, these ingredients play an important role in how a nicotine pouch performs.

Chemically stable nicotine salts are typically used as the basic building block of modern nicotine pouches. The pH adjusters raise the pH inside the pouch when it becomes moist in the mouth. This allows a portion of the nicotine to convert into its freebase (uncharged) form.

This may seem counterintuitive as the nicotine salt started as freebase nicotine initially before an acid was used to stabilize and reduce the pH.

Freebase nicotine is more readily absorbed through the lining of the mouth. This is why manufacturers carefully balance the nicotine salts, pH adjusters, moisture level, and pouch design to create the desired nicotine release.

This is what differentiates products and why two nicotine pouches containing the same amount of nicotine do not produce an identical experience.

Synthetic nicotine vs. tobacco-derived nicotine

Both synthetic nicotine and tobacco-derived nicotine are the same nicotine molecule (C₁₀H₁₄N₂) and behave the same chemically. The difference lies in how they are produced. Tobacco-derived nicotine is extracted and purified from tobacco plants, while synthetic nicotine is manufactured through chemical synthesis using non-tobacco starting materials. Once purified, the nicotine is chemically identical regardless of its origin.

Both forms are used in modern nicotine products, but MiPouch.com focuses on carrying synthetic nicotine pouches.

Large specialty chemical manufacturers supply high-purity nicotine to the industry, including companies such as Contraf-Nicotex-Tobacco (CNT) of Germany. This is one of the world's leading producers of pharmaceutical- and consumer-grade nicotine ingredients.

Whether nicotine is tobacco-derived or synthetic, manufacturers formulate it into nicotine salts before incorporating it into most modern nicotine pouches.

What affects nicotine release speed?

Nicotine release speed refers to how quickly nicotine becomes available from a nicotine pouch after it is placed under the lip. Several factors influence this process, including the pouch's moisture level, nicotine formulation, pH, pouch material, and the amount of time it is used.

Because manufacturers use different formulations, two nicotine pouches with the same labeled nicotine strength may release nicotine at different rates. Nicotine release speed is only one characteristic of a nicotine pouch and should not be confused with its labeled nicotine content.

11. Laws, Policies & Testing

Learn about age restrictions, FDA regulation, travel, drug testing, workplaces, international laws, and other policies affecting nicotine pouches.

How old do you have to be to buy nicotine pouches?

Since the passage of the federal Tobacco 21 law in December 2019, you must be 21 years of age or older to purchase nicotine pouches and other nicotine products in the United States.

This nationwide minimum age applies to products containing both tobacco-derived and synthetic nicotine. Retailers are generally required to verify the age of customers under 30 by checking a valid photo ID.

State and local laws may impose additional requirements, but they cannot authorize sales to anyone under the age of 21.

Are nicotine pouches legal?

Nicotine pouches are legal for sale in the United States to adults 21 years of age and older, subject to federal, state, and local laws.

Regulations can vary greatly by jurisdiction. Some states have additional restrictions on product registration, tobacco licensure, flavor bans, and other requirements. Retailers must comply with applicable laws before offering nicotine pouches for sale.

Outside the United States, the legal status of nicotine pouches varies widely by country, with some nations permitting their sale while others restrict or prohibit them.

Why are some nicotine pouch flavors unavailable in certain states or countries?

Flavor availability is often determined by local laws and regulations rather than the manufacturer. Customer demand can play a lesser role, as well as local supply chain as most nicotine pouches in the US are now manufactured here.

Some states and countries restrict or prohibit certain characterizing flavors, limit nicotine strength, or require products to meet specific regulatory standards before they can be sold.

For these reasons, the same nicotine pouch brand may offer different flavors or product lineups depending on where it is sold.

What is FDA authorization and what does it mean?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates nicotine pouches through the Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) process. Until recently, this was the same clunky system that has failed the US vaping industry at every turn.

When the FDA grants a marketing authorization, it has determined that a specific product may be legally marketed because doing so is appropriate for the protection of public health based on the scientific evidence submitted. This is not the same as FDA approval or a determination that the product is safe or risk-free.

Some nicotine pouch products have also received Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) orders. For example, certain ZYN nicotine pouches are authorized to market specific reduced-exposure claims because the FDA concluded that the evidence supports those claims.

An MRTP order applies only to the specific claims and products covered by the order and should not be interpreted as an endorsement or a finding that the product is safe. Other nicotine pouch manufacturers continue to pursue FDA authorization through the PMTA process.

What is the FDA's nicotine pouch pilot program (PMTA fast-track pathway)?

In September 2025, the FDA launched a nicotine pouch pilot program to streamline the review of Premarket Tobacco Product Applications (PMTAs).

This pilot program introduced process improvements, such as earlier communication with manufacturers and more efficient scientific review, while maintaining the same legal standard for FDA marketing authorization.

Although it is often referred to as a "PMTA fast-track pathway," the FDA's official name for the initiative is the Nicotine Pouch Pilot Program (NPPP).

Will nicotine pouches show up on a drug test?

Most standard employment drug tests do not screen for nicotine. However, some employers, life insurance companies, and healthcare providers specifically test for nicotine or its primary metabolite, cotinine.

Because nicotine pouches contain nicotine, using them may result in a positive nicotine or cotinine test regardless of whether the nicotine is tobacco-derived or synthetic.

Testing policies vary by employer, insurer, and organization, so review the applicable requirements if nicotine testing is part of the process.

Can nicotine pouches affect employment or life insurance?

Yes. Some employers and life insurance companies ask applicants about nicotine use or require nicotine or cotinine testing as part of their hiring or underwriting process.

Because nicotine pouches contain nicotine, using them may affect these assessments. Policies vary by employer, insurer, and jurisdiction, so review the applicable requirements if nicotine testing or disclosure of nicotine use is part of the process.

Can workplaces, businesses, and public places prohibit nicotine pouches?

Yes. While smoke-free laws often focus on smoking and vaping, employers and private property owners may establish their own policies regarding nicotine products.

Workplaces, schools, universities, hospitals, restaurants, casinos, stadiums, concert venues, and other businesses may adopt tobacco-free, nicotine-free, or other workplace policies that include nicotine pouches.

Even where local laws do not specifically prohibit nicotine pouches, always follow posted rules and the instructions of staff or security.

Can I mail nicotine pouches?

Nicotine pouches may be shipped within the United States, subject to applicable federal and state laws and the policies of the shipping carrier.

Some shipments may require age verification or other compliance measures, particularly for commercial sales. International shipments are subject to the import laws of the destination country and may be restricted or prohibited.

12. Alternative Pouches: Energy, Caffeine, CBD & Nixodine

Learn about nontraditional, nicotine-free pouches that contain other active ingredients such as caffeine, CBD and Nixodine.

Energy Pouches vs Caffeine Pouches

Energy pouches are a broad category of oral pouches containing functional ingredients such as caffeine, vitamins, amino acids, or botanical extracts.

Caffeine pouches are a specific type of energy pouch in which caffeine is the primary active ingredient.

While nearly all caffeine pouches are energy pouches, not all energy pouches rely on caffeine alone. Some products combine caffeine with ingredients such as L-theanine, B vitamins, electrolytes, nootropic compounds and even CBD to create novel formulations.

WIP energy pouches combine caffeine with vitamins and other functional ingredients in a tobacco-free, nicotine-free pouch. Available in 100mg and 200mg strength.

Mojo Energy Pouches combine caffeine with functional ingredients: Yerba Mate, Vitamin B3, B6, B12, Asian Ginseng, and Rhodiola. Berserker offers a norse themed caffeine pouch in great flavors with minimal ingredients. Cannadips Brain Fuel combines caffeine with L-theanine and Lion's Mane mushroom in a nicotine-free pouch intended for adult consumers.

Energy Pouches vs. Coffee & Energy Drinks

Energy pouches and caffeine pouches offer a different user experience than coffee or energy drinks. Depending on your situation, it might be a more convenient user experience as well.

Energy pouches are easily transported in small plastic can rather than a cup or bottle. Each can holds up to 20, essentially carrying a case of energy with you.

Storage is obvious and they don't also  require refrigeration. Or percolation like a coffee. The cupholder isn't tied up. There is no real danger of spilling liquid. And many of the energy pouches are sugar-free and have few calories.

As with any caffeinated product, compare the caffeine content and ingredients, and use them according to the manufacturer's directions.

Zero nicotine and herbal pouches

CBD, functional, and nicotine-free pouches offer alternatives to traditional nicotine pouches.

These products may contain ingredients such as CBD, caffeine, vitamins, botanicals, mushrooms, amino acids, or other functional blends, while nicotine-free pouches are designed to provide a familiar pouch format without nicotine.

Popular examples include Cannadips CBD, Cannadips Brain Fuel, Zimo Zero, and other herbal or nicotine-free pouch products. As with any consumer product, use with care and as directed.

Nixodine Pouches

Nixodine is a patented, non-nicotine blend that is marketed as providing an experience comparable to nicotine without containing nicotine or tobacco.

Nixodine pouches use this proprietary ingredient in a familiar tobacco-free oral pouch format and are available in a variety of flavors and strengths.

Products such as Diip Reset incorporate Nixodine as an alternative to traditional nicotine pouches. Nixodine products are intended for adults 21 years of age and older who already use nicotine products and are not intended for individuals who do not currently use nicotine.

Because Nixodine is chemically distinct from nicotine, its regulatory status may differ by jurisdiction, so always review applicable local laws before purchasing or using these products.
